Flying into Tokyo and deciding between Narita (NRT) and Haneda (HND)? For most first-time visitors, the right answer is not simply the cheaper flight. Compare the total time and cost from the airport to your hotel.
If you are still choosing your Tokyo base, compare Shinjuku vs Ueno before booking your hotel so the airport transfer and hotel location work together.
Why Haneda is usually easier
Haneda is physically much closer to central Tokyo. Keikyu lists the fastest rail time from Haneda Airport to Shinagawa at 14 minutes. That can make arrival day noticeably easier, especially if you are staying around Shinagawa, Tokyo Station, Shibuya or Shinjuku.
If two flights have similar prices and schedules, Haneda often wins on convenience. If you are still deciding where to base yourself after landing, compare Shinjuku vs Ueno for your Tokyo stay.
Why Narita can still be the better choice
Narita is farther away, but it has strong rail links. JR East says the fastest Narita Express journey from Narita Airport Station to Tokyo Station is 53 minutes. Keisei says the Skyliner can connect Airport Terminal 2·3 and Nippori in as little as 36 minutes.
Narita can still make sense when the airfare is much better, the flight schedule is better, or your hotel is convenient for the Skyliner or another Narita route.
The simple rule
- Choose Haneda when flight prices are close and you value an easier arrival into central Tokyo.
- Choose Narita when the flight itself is clearly better value or better timed.
Do not compare airfare alone. Compare flight price + airport transfer cost + door-to-door time.
Before you book
Check your actual hotel address and arrival time. A route that looks fast on paper can become slower late at night or after a long international flight.
