For many first-time visitors, Welcome Suica is one of the simplest ways to make local transportation in Japan easier. If you are still deciding where to base yourself in Tokyo, compare Shinjuku vs Ueno before booking your stay.

How long is Welcome Suica valid?

JR East says Welcome Suica is valid for 28 days including the date of purchase. The validity period starts immediately when you buy the card, and it becomes invalid on day 29.

That means you should not buy it too early if your trip starts later.

Is there a deposit?

No. JR East says no deposit is required when purchasing Welcome Suica.

Where can you buy it?

Current sales locations include Narita Airport Terminal 1, Narita Airport Terminal 2·3, Haneda Airport Terminal 3, and major JR East locations such as Tokyo, Shibuya, Shinjuku, Ikebukuro and Ueno. Availability at some stations can change, so check JR East before your trip.

What can you use it for?

You can use Welcome Suica for many local trains and buses and at participating stores that display the compatible IC symbol. It does not replace every long-distance train ticket, so Shinkansen and certain limited express trips may still require separate tickets or reservations.

Simple first-trip advice

  • Buy it close to the start of your trip because the 28-day clock starts on purchase day.
  • Keep track of your balance before long travel days.
  • Do not assume it covers every train in Japan.
  • Keep the reference paper provided with the card during your trip.
