Taking the Shinkansen with a large suitcase? Measure it before you book.

If Tokyo is part of your route, it also helps to decide your base early. Our Shinjuku vs Ueno hotel-area comparison can help you choose a convenient place to stay before you lock in longer train journeys.

The 160 cm rule

JR Central says baggage with a total of length + width + height of 160 cm or less does not normally require an oversized-baggage reservation.

If the total dimensions are 161–250 cm, you need to reserve a seat with an oversized baggage area on the Tokaido-Sanyo-Kyushu Shinkansen.

What if you do not reserve?

JR Central states that passengers carrying oversized baggage without the required reservation can be charged a ¥1,000 baggage fee.

What if your bag is larger than 250 cm?

Baggage with total dimensions over 250 cm cannot be brought onboard under these rules.

What should first-time visitors do?

  • Measure your suitcase before buying the ticket.
  • If it is 161–250 cm, reserve the appropriate oversized-baggage seat or space.
  • If your luggage is extremely large, consider a luggage forwarding service instead.
  • Do not wait until you reach the platform to figure it out.

This matters most on common visitor routes such as Tokyo → Kyoto → Osaka.
